In the Goran house, we are fans of @Oatly and making smoothies. People have written to say that Oatly or other similar plant-based beverages can raise blood glucose rapidly and they are absolutely correct. It’s what you consume with the milk that counts. In this experiment I wore a @freestylediabetes glucose monitor as part of my participation in the @zoe program and the results may be surprising.

On day 1 at 11am after an overnight fast, I consumed 1 cup of oat milk.

On day 2 at 11am after an overnight fast, I consumed a smoothie made with 1 cup of oat milk, 1/2 a cup of ice, 2 small dates, 1/2 a cup of hazelnuts with 1 tablespoon of flax seeds and 1 tablespoon of chia seeds.

As you can see, the combination of the protein and the fiber flattened the glucose response, even though I consumed the same amount of oat milk, adding in 2 dates as well.

Top your smoothies off each time with flax, chia and/or another source of fiber to flatten the glucose response and also improve digestion/gut health. Double benefit!

For more ideas to reduce sugars and flatten glucose spikes see our book “Sugarproof “. See our flow page (link in our bio) for more details.
